What is a Meta Description?
A meta description is a short HTML summary of a page, typically up to about 155–160 characters, that search engines may show beneath the page title in results.

Why it matters
Meta descriptions do not directly affect ranking, but a clear, specific one can make a result more likely to be clicked. When a page has none, the search engine writes its own snippet from the page content — often poorly.
